HOME HOW WE TRANSFER YOUR NUMBER TO YOUR CAR          STOCK
It really is very simple – I used to complete several thousand transfers each year! Having been a dealer in cherished numbers since 1986 I’ve probably met most “snags”.  Also I’m still a serving member of the Cherished Number Dealers Association (CNDA) affiliated to the RMI and we meet regularily with the top department levels of the DVLA to assist in forward policy.

At the time of your purchase I will ask you for the name of the "registered keeper" of the car that you want me to transfer the number to. It is important to get this right - it is the actual name that appears on your V5 registration document - the "log book". Please note that you cannot transfer a "newer" plate on to an "older" vehicle e.g. H1 ABC cannot transfer to F342 ABC but can transfer to any vehicle registered on a "H" or newer e.g. H1 ABC can transfer to N342 ABC or AB 54 ABC etc

Many people buy plates for themselves or as presents and they do not want to put the number on a car straight away. That is no problem - I can usually supply you with a DVLA certificate of entitlement that will keep the mark "on hold" for you for up to 12 months (or longer if you pay the DVLA fee for further extension - £25 per annum). I will arrange for the name of the future "registered keeper" to be added to the certificate so it matches up when the actual car is available.

Assuming that you want to put your number on a car immediately I will ask you to send me:

  • The original V5 registration document
  • The original MOT certificate (if applicable)
  • A Photocopy of your tax disc
  • Sometimes I will also need your signature on a transfer form

And in 95% of transfers that is it! I will arrange your transfer through a local Vehicle Registration Office ( a regional office of DVLA ). About a week later I will send you a brand new tax disc showing your new number and for the same period of validity as your original disc which you then send back to me. Your MOT certificate, if applicable, will be amended and also returned to you at this point.

You can, on receipt of your new tax disc, go out and buy the actual number plates. With your new disc I send you a DVLA form that proves your entitlement to the registration mark. Remember that due to the  anti-crime legislation that has come into force you will also need proof of personal identity when you buy your plates! A photo card driving licence is ideal.

You will receive a new V5 registration document a few weeks later direct from DVLA Swansea but the issuing of the new tax disc is authority to use your new number on the road.

And the other 5% of transfers that are the exception to the rule? Worry not, I’ve experienced all the "quirks" and I will always explain any differences at the start so you are fully aware of any extra papers or small delays!

Lorries, motorcycles, tow trucks, lease cars, company cars, Motability, multiple transfers…not a problem, just leave it all in safe hands.
